Sharon Phelps is an artist based in the UK, and a research student at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London. She is making a practice-led study of Agnes Martin and the relation of Martin’s work to contemporary art practice at the limits of painting. Sharon’s recent artworks are the result of a meditative practice in which everyday materials are selected for their particular qualities. The delicate works are often two-sided. The layered pieces can be hand-held, and attentive looking is rewarded by nuanced surfaces and careful marks. Simple compositions with slightly irregular outer edges highlight the fragility of the materials and reveal the making processes.
